REQUIEM

Below are the two final essays to be posted on Allegiance and Duty Betrayed. The first one is written by a friend -- screen name 'Euro-American Scum' -- who, over the past four years, has been the most faithful essayist here. He has written about everything from his pilgrimage to Normandy in 2004 to take part in the 60th–year commemoration of the invasion, to his memories of his tour in Vietnam. His dedication to America’s founding principles ... and those who have sacrificed to preserve them over the past 200+ years ... is unequaled. Thank you, E-A-S. It has been a privilege to include your writing here, and it is a privilege to call you my friend.

The second essay is my own farewell. And with it I thank all of the many regular visitors, and those who may have only dropped in occasionally, for coming here. I hope you learned something. I hope a seed or two was planted. But, even if not, I thank you for stopping by ... 25 March, 2010

A Desperate Plea to Democrats

As regular readers here know, I am not enamored of performers/celebrities. To say that I avoid them like the plague would be a vast understatement. And to say that I avoid listening to their political pronouncements could conceivably qualify as the understatement of the century.

But, (as they say) some rules were made to be broken. :)

I was lying in bed one morning a couple of days ago, in that interim state of consciousness between genuinely asleep and ‘just five more minutes and I’ll be ready to face the day’. The television was on in the bedroom, and tuned to FoxNews. Somewhere in a dark, barely-conscious recess of my mind I heard a male voice talking. And it was talking in a way that made my brain neurons instantly start rapid-firing.

Turns out the speaker was none other than Dennis Miller (comedian, and member of the aforementioned generally and perfunctorily disdained ‘performer/celebrity’ cadre). I sat up and took notice. And I witnessed what amounts to a modern American miracle: A ‘celebrity’ was making political sense. As a matter of fact, he was hitting the equivalent of a series of editorial home runs.

Below is a transcript of his rant. Watching it live on FoxNews was much more powerful, because his harangue was accompanied by extraordinarily effective visual aids (just a few of which I have poorly attempted to replicate here) and absolutely priceless sarcastic facial expressions.

At any rate, kudos are due to Mr. Miller. He has dared to stick his head above the Hollywood crowd and utter rational, intelligent (if irreverent), patriotic political rhetoric – words that won’t win him any friends in Hollywood. But he’s at least laid the groundwork for a new friendship here in south-central Pennsylvania. :)

I want to shoot the election results through the prism of a brilliant book I just finished called ‘America Alone,’ by Mark Steyn.

Steyn’s incredible. He makes Thomas Paine ...

... read like Professor Irwin Corey.

And he reminds us that the war on terror is like skiing a double black diamond run. We better commit to it and carve this turn or we’re eventually gonna catch a dirty bomb for it.

And so I want to ask a favor of my liberal brethren and I’ll ask nicely because you did just win:

Please please keep your eye on the Radical Islamic Terror Ball. I really don’t care what else you do. Raise the minimum wage to $7.15 (I could use the extra deuce.) Just stay frosty about the Islamo-fascists.

Now I don’t know exactly how we fix Iraq. Maybe Neil Kinnock’s suggestion by way of Joe Biden that we partition off Iraq is the way to go. The Sunni here. The Shia there. The small Kurds here. The large Kurds there. But I do know this about Iraq: We can’t leave until it’s won. And hopefully won in a William-Tecumseh-Sherman-like rout.

If our exit strategy in Iraq is premature, we better get to work on our entrance strategy for the next throw-down, 'cause whether we like it or not this thing is on. And probably on for the next few generations.

And also, Nancy dear ... Now that you’ve won, can you and yours please shut up about the WMDs? Endlessly fixating on our insertion point into this war is like worrying about which entry ramp you used to get on a trans-continental highway. Who cares now? We’re driving. Keep your shockingly wide eyes on the road, okay doll?

This Al-Masri guy proclaims that he wants more of our blood and Al Qaeda won’t stop until they light up a brown paper bag filled with dog dung on the front steps of the White House.

And we counter by trotting out George McGovern, to lead some tactile touch encounter group under the same dome our enemies live to destroy.

Wake up! George Bush’s main achievement is that, as of today, the ‘Days Without an Accident’ sign on the American warehouse wall reads ‘1893’. And the only truly empirical way we can judge Bush (that is, no more terror attacks on domestic soil since 9/11), he gets an A+.

Don’t screw it up, dems! We’re all watching!

Some friends of mine saw Dennis Miller perform in a club a few years ago. Most of his act was political, and they said he was brilliant.

Two things have made me a die-hard Dennis Miller fan:

1. He and Elton John have a running feud.

2. He regularly visits wounded American soldiers.

This is a good rant. I never paid much attention to Miller. Now I will. :>)

Good post. The picture of Irwin Corey brought back fond memories. :o)

Thanks.

Thanks for the transcript.

Looking at the picture of al-Mazri sends a chill up the spine. That's what the dems want us to "work with."

I remember when this happened a couple years ago. Three cheers for Miller:

While performing at a benefit concert in Las Vegas, Elton John let loose with an Al Franken-like attack against Dennis Miller.
Before John’s performance, Miller served the crowd a special heaping of his ultra-hip wry commentary.

In between the humor, he urged that we do some drilling in ANWR to lessen our dependence on oil imports.

After singing “Tiny Dancer,” John blamed the comedian-turned-Fox News commentator for the disdain that Kofi & Company have toward the U.S.

“Americans are always asking why the rest of the world hates them,” the wildly bespectacled entertainer explained. “Well, the reason is Dennis Miller.”

Summing up Miller’s performance, John added, “You've all gone mental if you liked that.”

When asked about Elton’s remarks, Miller calmly told the Las Vegas Sun, “Everyone is entitled to their opinion.”

The Left Coast Report says mental must be in the political eye of the beholder.

The photo you chose inviting us to 'come and adore Him' is a very powerful image. It resonated with me. There's something magical going on. There's a truth glimmering below the surface.

It reminded me of a line in Shakespeare's Hamlet..."So hallowed and so gracious is the time"...

"Tis now the very witching hour of the night," Hamlet says, to characterize the wintry and dark world his family has become...a community where lust breeds madness and murder, and murder leads to revenge and more murder.

In Shakespeare's Hamlet, as in our own time, it's the people on the fringe, who hold to a hope that others have forgotten. In this case, two soldiers forced to stand the night watch who give voice to the ancient, saving story that stands against the chaos. Two characters are discussing the ghostly apparition...then, Marcellus muses...
“Some say that ever ‘gainst that season comes wherein our Savior’s birth is celebrated . . .
the bird of dawning singeth all night long; And then, they say, no spirit dare stir abroad . . . no fairy takes, nor witch hath power to charm,so hallowed and so gracious is that time.”
Are these shivering soldiers awake to a universal hope, the dream that Christ’s “hallowed and gracious” coming will banish the “witching hour”?

Do these night watchers know that if God does not rend the heavens and come down, the cycle of violence around them will never be broken?

It is sometimes said that Christmas brings out the child in us. If that means that children can sometimes grasp the point better than adults can, then we should welcome the opportunity to enter again into the world where we can, indeed, adore Him. This picture is such a lovely invitation for us to peer into the beginning when the word of life became flesh and lived among us. If at this Christmas time we come as little children, then we too can experience the true joy of God with us.

Thank you for finding such a thought provoking image and for posting it for us.

May your Christmastime be a joyous one. May it be filled with grace and hallowed, indeed.

Earthly reward for church vandals
BBC News ^ | 26 November 2006

Three teenagers who burgled and vandalised a church in the US state of Montana will be given "love baskets" of electronic games by the congregation.

The three youths broke into Missoula's South Hills Evangelical Church two weeks ago, stealing money and smashing windows and computers, police said.

Officers caught them still in the church and charged them with burglary.

Church pastor Jason Reimer said the congregation wanted "to reach out and extend love and mercy to them".

"A lot of us, whether we're churchgoers or not, have been in their shoes before and have made some bad choices," Mr Reimer said. "But God forgives us."

Marijuana and pills

The teenagers are accused of breaking into the South Hills Evangelical Church (SHEC) just before midnight on 12 November and causing several thousand dollars' worth of damage.

"They did smash some stuff, like computer monitors, windows, televisions and sprayed a fire extinguisher in the gym," Mr Reimer said.

Cannabis, a pipe and some pills were found on the teenagers, he said.

The following Sunday, the church's main pastor, John Erbele, used the incident in his sermon to preach about the Christian virtues of mercy and forgiveness.

Church members began to collect donations for "love baskets" to present to the youths.

"We've collected several hundred dollars' worth of gift cards, Xboxes and controllers, a DVD, a VCR,"
said Mr Reimer.

If the teenagers escape a jail sentence, the church hopes the gifts will help keep them off the streets and out of trouble.

If the gadgets are not enough, the SHEC also offers a skateboard park, a centre for teenagers, a weight room and an addiction recovery service.

In addition, the church hosts a band, Goofyfooted, which features rock-and-roll pastor Erbele on guitar.

"We want to help them get their lives straightened out," said Mr Reimer.

Sandra, those church members are sick leftwing whackos. I dare say God would not be proud.

The Young Conservatives of Texas - University of Texas Chapter announced today that they will be displaying an “ACLU Nativity Scene” on the West Mall of the University of Texas campus on Monday and Tuesday, December 4th and 5th.

The group’s intent is to raise awareness on the extremity of the ACLU, and bring to light its secular-progressive efforts to remove Christmas from the public sphere. The display, the first of its kind in the nation, will feature characters that are quite a bit different than the standard crèche.

“We’ve got Gary and Joseph instead of Mary and Joseph in order to symbolize ACLU support for homosexual marriage, and of course there isn’t a Jesus in the manger,” said Chairman Tony McDonald.

“The three Wise Men are Lenin, Marx, and Stalin because the founders of the ACLU were strident supporters of Soviet style Communism. The whole scene is a tongue-in-cheek way of showing the many ways that the ACLU and the far left are out of touch with the values of mainstream America.”

The scene will also display a terrorist shepherd and an angel in the form of Nancy Pelosi.

Miller's in a small conservative contingent in Hollywood---maybe 2% of Hollywood "elites". More power to him.

Miller wasn't always a conservative. When he was on SNL, he was "one of the crowd." I guess he finally grew up.

W.Va. city's Xmas scene has no Jesus

By TOM BREEN December 1, 2006
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. -- Christ is missing from Christmas in this small town. The community's holiday display has a manger with shepherds, a guiding star, camels and a palm tree, but no baby Jesus, Mary or Joseph.

The parks superintendent said Jesus was left out because of concerns about the separation of church and state. But Mayor Dick Callaway said it was done for purely technical reasons: "It's not easy to put a light-up representation of a baby in a small manger scene, you know."

In recent years, some communities around the country have dropped nativity scenes after the displays were challenged as unconstitutional. Some communities have tried to head off legal problems by incorporating nonreligious symbols, or symbols of more than one faith, to avoid the appearance of endorsing one religion over another.

David Cunningham, parks superintendent in this town of 11,000, initially insisted St. Albans' display was not even technically a manger scene. But the mayor disputed that and said Cunningham was unnecessarily worried about lawsuits.

"We have a manger scene," the mayor said.

Around the country, only a few skirmishes in what some conservatives have called the "War on Christmas" have been reported this year so far.

Some retailers, including Wal-Mart, have returned to greeting customers with "Merry Christmas" after coming under attack last year for saying, "Happy Holidays."

Two weeks ago, the Marine Reserves Toys for Tots program in Los Angeles overcame concerns about accepting a donation of 4,000 talking Jesus dolls that quote Bible verses by promising to make sure the dolls reach Christian children.

Some people are still scratching their heads over what happened in Chicago, where the movie studio behind "The Nativity Story" was dropped as a sponsor of a Christmas festival for fear of offending non-Christians.

In Wheeling, baby Jesus is represented in a manger scene at Olgebay Park's Winter Festival of Lights, which draws visitors from across the country.

"If anything, we get criticized for not having more examples of that type of thing," said J.C. Douglas Dalby, president of the Wheeling Park Commission.

St. Albans, VA must have an insane asylum within its city limits, and the patients must have escaped and are posing as city officials. There's no other explanation.

Hispanic groups call for moratorium on work raids; 'reminiscent of Nazi crackdowns on Jews in the 1930s'...

Hispanic groups call for moratorium on work raids
By Jim Forsyth Dec 21, 2006

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - U.S. Hispanic groups and activists on Thursday called for a moratorium on workplace raids to round up illegal immigrants, saying they were reminiscent of Nazi crackdowns on Jews in the 1930s.

They accused the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement of "racial profiling," or selective enforcement against Hispanics, for arresting 1,300 workers on immigration violations in December 12 raids at meatpacking plants in six states.

"We are demanding an end to these immigration raids, where they are targeting brown faces. That is major, major racial profiling, and that cannot be tolerated," said Rosa Rosales, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, at a news conference.

"This unfortunately reminds me of when Hitler began rounding up the Jews for no reason and locking them up," Democratic Party activist Carla Vela said. "Now they're coming for the Latinos, who will they come for next?"

They also called on Congress to quickly to approve immigration legislation that would allow for "guest workers" to remain in the United States.

The government crackdown follows months of political debate about illegal immigrants that culminated in a new law authorizing, among other things, construction of a 700-mile wall along several stretches of the U.S.-Mexican border.

Many of those arrested in the December 12 raids, all at Swift & Co. plants, were from Latin American countries.
Chertoff said the raids showed that illegal immigrants, estimated to number 12 million in the United States, contributed to the problem of identity theft because they worked under false or stolen identities.
Anger at anti-immigrant rhetoric and measures is said to have hurt Republican candidates with Hispanic voters in November elections that saw the Democrats win a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.
LULAC, the oldest and largest Hispanic group in the country with 115,000 members, said workplace raids would cause families to be separated if the arrested immigrants were deported and also would hurt the U.S. economy.
"Every labor-intensive industry including the hospitality, construction, agriculture and restaurant industries will be adversely impacted if these raids continue," Rosales said.
