REQUIEM

Below are the two final essays to be posted on Allegiance and Duty Betrayed. The first one is written by a friend -- screen name 'Euro-American Scum' -- who, over the past four years, has been the most faithful essayist here. He has written about everything from his pilgrimage to Normandy in 2004 to take part in the 60th–year commemoration of the invasion, to his memories of his tour in Vietnam. His dedication to America’s founding principles ... and those who have sacrificed to preserve them over the past 200+ years ... is unequaled. Thank you, E-A-S. It has been a privilege to include your writing here, and it is a privilege to call you my friend.

The second essay is my own farewell. And with it I thank all of the many regular visitors, and those who may have only dropped in occasionally, for coming here. I hope you learned something. I hope a seed or two was planted. But, even if not, I thank you for stopping by ... 25 March, 2010

Men Who Take Pleasure in Evil

vick dog.gif

Animals are far more ‘civilized’ than we humans when it comes to wreaking violence on one another. Very few animals kill simply for the sake of killing. Their killing is done mainly for food, for survival, and as part of the mating ritual (a natural example of ‘survival of the fittest’, in a sense). They do not kill for sport, or simply for the sake of killing.

Not that I object to man killing for sport when he hunts. But there is a world of difference between shooting a deer and eating the meat, and training dogs to be bloodthirsty and vicious in order to enjoy observing the gruesome results, and to benefit financially by pitting them against one another.

On an even lower moral plane is a man who not only authors/participates in the aforementioned brutality, but also tortures and kills those animals who either refuse, by nature, or are not strong enough, to be victorious in these contrived barbaric ‘contests’.

Our daughter spent two weeks in Kenya on business a short time ago. When she had some time off one day, she visited an animal refuge outside of Kisumu. Infant animals whose mothers have either abandoned them or been killed are raised in this refuge, and spend their remaining days there. Releasing them into the wild once they have been rescued by humans does not work.

Debating whether or not that is a wise thing to do might be reserved for another time. With that said …

The refuge is enormous, and the infant-through-adult animals have very large areas in which they live. Such an existence for them is sad, in that they would be much better off in their natural habitat, but they are treated well at the refuge.

While there, our daughter spoke with some of the keepers and discovered that, in all the years of the refuge’s existence, these animals have lived together in complete harmony, among themselves, and with the humans with whom they come into contact every day – simply because their needs are met, and there is no need to attack or kill for survival. It is the need to feed, the need to ward off natural predators, and the need to prove one’s dominance in mating, that causes animals in the wild to be violent.

While our daughter was observing the adult cheetahs being fed, she was allowed to enter their area and sit next to one. Below is a photo. This is a ‘wild’ animal, at feeding time, allowing a human to pet him – and he responded by purring like a kitten. She continued to pet him for a few minutes, with three other adult cheetahs feeding in the vicinity as well.

Mandy in Kenya 6.jpg

When man’s needs are met, there are those who are satisfied, and willing and content, even privileged, to live in harmony with those around them. And then, unlike animals, there are those whose natural bent is to want more – be it power, influence, material wealth, etc. – and their insatiable desire for more, and their strange inability to ever obtain peace of mind, is the reason for the violence that some men insist on perpetrating on others.

We all know who on this earth fits neatly in the latter human-on-human group of madmen bent on violence. We hear and read about their atrocities every day.

There is also a fine line between abusing animals and abusing other men. The stories I have read describing what Michael Vick did to young dogs who either refused, or were not strong enough, to perform well in his vicious fights causes me to react in the same way as I do to descriptions of what Islamo-fascists do to their fellow man.

Just as I cannot wrap my mind around the beheading of what madmen choose to call ‘infidels’, so I cannot also comprehend how any man can find it pleasurable to force a dog to swim in a smooth-sided container until it has no choice but to drown, or tie a dog down to a stake and then beat it to death until nothing remains of its existence but a pool of blood and a few strands of unrecognizable fur.

Men who take pleasure in evil (even some who are worshipped and revered) walk among us. A year in prison, and a monetary fine, will not cleanse a heart so black.

You can all chalk me up as a lunatic if you want to, but I think he ought to get 10-20 years.

Good thoughts. Thank you.

(Your daughter is braver than I.) :-)

Years ago, when I told someone a lot of the same things you wrote here about men and animals, he said, "What about those stories you hear about pet dogs sometimes attacking the children in the house?"

I answered that there are "rogue" dogs just like there are "rogue" people, but as a species(?) it is very unusual to come across one that kills or gets violent just for the sake of killing. Men are different.

Very interesting correlations between notorious criminals and animal cruelty:

True, Sharon.

You'll see two dogs go at it when they just don't like each other. But you'll never see a dog (or any other animal) just kill another one for no reason and walk away and leave the body lying there.

P.S. Good column, CW. And I'm glad you're not mad at us hunters. I'd hate to have to put my Ruger 77 in storage. < g >

You're not a lunatic, Lori. Here's the difference between you (and me, and other "animal welfare" advocates) and the idiots at groups like PETA ("animal rights" advocates):

The animal welfare and animal rights movements represent two different responses to the issue. The animal rights movement holds that animals have rights, as humans do, including the right not to be used against their own best interests for human gain, and that humans should stop treating animals as commodities.

The animal welfare movement believes that the use of animals for human ends is justified in some instances, but within this view, seeks to end unnecessary suffering and improve animals' treatment.

Now I can see why they don't release them back into the wild.

They wouldn't last ten seconds.

People are killed every year by animals in zoos and in circuses.

Not so. That is an unusual event.

And animals in zoos and circuses are often mistreated.

Try walking into a tiger's cage sometime.

(Seriously----I hope you don't !).

Anonymous said...

Try living in a cage sometime. Tigers don't belong in a cage. Caged animals are mistreated animals. And caged animals have nothing to do with the subject of this essay.

Anonymous said...

As was said in this article, wild animals belong in the wild. It sounds like the animals at the animal preserve were very well cared for and they lived in as close to the "wild" as possible. Animals that live in cages are prisoners. Most zoos and probably all circuses mistreat animals, which is why I will never go to either one.

Enough what? Danger?

I don't know if I would have done what Joanie's daughter did either, but I'm not so sure she "went looking for danger" either. Maybe she just has a different definition of it than you do.

I will take a stab at what you cannot "wrap your mind around."

(Although I doubt I will be successful).

Such people live on HATE.

They are encouraged to go wild with hate.

muslims are indoctrinated in hate 24 hours a day, from the time they are born.
Large sections of the US population are encouraged to live on hate.

The indoctrination is always the same--It appeals to the emotions and stirs them up to a raging pitch.

The leftwing is a hatefest.
Read the comments on top leftwing sites like Daily Kos and Democratic Underground and they will make your skin crawl. They want anyone who does not accept their leftwing insanity to be annihilated.

Just as the muslims do with their "mission."

In the US, bow tie Farakahn and company sell hate and indoctrinate very large sections of the US population. The US prisons are indoctrination centers for this. The indoctrinated believe every word they are given.

The "news" media encourages this.
The US government is infested with purveyors and enablers of this agenda. The US Court system also is infested. US Academia is completely infested--look at the Duke University "88" and their leaping to express their hate.

The purpose is to stir the emotions of the army of haters to the boiling pitch.

Listen to Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Ahmadinejad, Nancy Pelosi, Jesse Jackson, Harry Reid speak.

What IS their purpose? To stir hate.

The so-called "immigrants" swarming over the US have adopted this hate mode and see it work to their advantage with the eager help of the ACLU, the news media, and even the US government.

The Michael Vicks of this world have been indoctrinated in hate and believe they have every right to act out this sickness. Look how the NAACP defended Vick and whined that he is a victim of racists and deserves “another chance.”.

The stupidity resulting from this indoctrination is breathtaking. Here is an example.

I go to a grocery store in the less than ideal neighborhood I live in where the prices are cheaper (a store manager told me the chain considers this store in a depressed area and lowers its prices accordingly).

The other night I waited at the manager's desk for a refund when, as usual, they rang up what I got with prices higher than those posted.
In front of me was a Farakhan type applying for some kind of store card. When he found out the manager was from Viet Nam he went nuts and started asking her why the US fought a war there—“Was it because of the oil? "

I started laughing, very loudly, and the jerk turned around to me.
I asked him while laughing hard where he got his information about the oil in Vietnam.
Meanwhile the manager lady, looking alarmed, said with a lowered head that she didn't know of "no oil in Viet Nam," left his card on the counter and ran away inside her well barricaded and barred office.

My Farakahn friend and “history” expert decided there was something strange about me and my laughing and decided to leave.
I got my refund after I coaxed the poor manager out of her office.
And she told me bravely as I was leaving with my refunded $1.50, “Don’t come here no more to make no more trouble.”

Another thing is that that these haters are invariably cowards.

The muslims blow up busloads of schoolchildren and chop off the heads of people who have their arms and legs tied down.

The lefties are the biggest cowards in the world and scream in agony when their agendas are rejected.

The Farakhan types always operate in groups and disappear at the sight of any real opposition.

Who but a total coward would beat a tied down dog to death?

Hate, cowardice, drugs, and indoctrination make an insane stew.

You are very correct to say you "cannot get your mind around" this because insanity by its very nature is incomprehensible.

These people are not reclaimable.

Al, I don't disagree with anything you said in the well-worded essay above.

But hate doesn't exist is a vacuum. Joanie said "And then, unlike animals, there are those whose natural bent is to want more -- be it power, influence, material wealth, etc. -- and their insatiable desire for more, and their strange inability to ever obtain peace of mind, is the reason for the violence that some men insist on perpetrating on others."

The hate you described probably fits into one of the categories she listed (or maybe another one that she didn't).

I know that with "Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Ahmadinejad, Nancy Pelosi, Jesse Jackson, Harry Reid" it stems from a thirst for all three (power, influence, material wealth).

Thanks for the good example of a well-reasoned, well-written reply. Your grocery store experience is mind boggling.

Excellent column, Joanie, and excellent additions, Al.

There isn't much difference between U.S. prisons and many "mosques" - I don't like to use that word because it used to mean a house of worship - in the U.S. They are both breeding grounds for volunteers for the next 9/11 and worse.

I think Vick's punishment should be the worst that he did to his dogs. Fair is fair.

Anonymous said...

There is some fine writing here. I have bookmarked and will read more. Thank you.

Anonymous said...

Al,the best point you made is that the hate filled people you referred to, including many of our own leaders, are cowards. They operate under the protection of groups and never stick their heads above the crowd as an individual. It's the "gang mentality."

Anonymous said...

A friend on mine in my office told me about this web site last month. I check in here about once a week and always find something stimulating to read. Sometimes it sticks with me for a long time and I talk about it with other people. I just wanted you to know that.

There's a fine line between determined and insane, and more and more people, especially Muslims, are crossing it, and being allowed to.

As time goes on, it seems like there are more and more people who fit in the last group instead of the first. Million of words could be written on why.

calbrindisi said"...you'll never see a dog (or any other animal) just kill another one for no reason and walk away and leave the body lying there."

I have to disagree with that. On the other thread, I mentioned a dog fight at the neighbor's that I had to break up a couple years ago.

Well, by the time I got there with my .357 in hand, there was nothing to break up. The one dog had gnawed the other's foreleg almost completely off and the poor pit bull just lay there bleeding to death while the aggressor dog (another pit bull) just stood there and watched. Thankfully, this one ran off and hid under a car when I approached.

I heard a gunshot when the neighbor got home.

Now maybe the killer dog had a "reason", but not any that you and I could possibly understand since animals don't think conceptually like (most) humans.

Some dogs (and some people) are just killers.

Anonymous said...

Cooper, have you ever heard of an animal in the wild that kills other animals "just for the fun of it" and leaves them laying there? That just doesn't happen in the rest of the animal kingdom. Wild animals always have a reason for killing. When we domesticated animals, we may have made them more of a killing machine in some cases because we suppressed their natural nature (which may be why dog fights like the one you described occur. Who knows what brought that about except for the dogs).

Forget about domesticated dogs for a minute and consider wild animals in their natural habitat. In their natural state animals do not kill without reason. Man does.

Vick: "Through this situation I've found Jesus."

Why does everybody keep picking on the poor guy.

He admitted his 'mistake.'

Let bygones be bygones.

Who among us is without fault?

We all know he was just singled out because of who he is.

I sincerely believe that Michael Vick will become a Washington Post and New York TIMES supported spokeman for animal rights in the not so distant future.

Just as Jesse 'Mr. Hymietown' Jackson is their man to go to when they need quotes on 'civil rights.'

Anonymous said...

Anonymous, you forgot the /sarc tag. Someone with a double digit I.Q. might think you're serious.

P.S. Jackson has forever relinquished the right to champion "civil rights." For one reason, because I have the "civil right" to not eat food laced with other people's spit. There are dozens of other reasons but I get dizzy thinking about them so I'll let it go at that.

I remember when I was a kid our minister preached a sermon on the commandment that talks about "taking the Lord's name in vain."

He explained that that doesn't just mean using God's name in anger. It also means using it in a demeaning or trivial way.

I'd say Vick's use of it today qualifies.

Joanie, friends of ours were in Mombasa, Kenya many years ago on a missions trip. For a few days they stayed in a place outside of the city where all of the houses (actually huts) were up on stilts and (I think it might have been at night, but it could have been in the day) you could look out your window and see all kinds of animals feedingm from giraffes to hippos(?). You had to be jeeped in to the place. They did that once a day. And then the next day when they brought more people in they jeeped you out. They said it was surreal and that Kenya is one of their favorite places in the whole world. Did your daughter like it there?

Anonymous said...

If the judge sentences Vick to 1 year like most reporters are talking about, he'll get off easy. I hope inmates hate animal abusers as much as they hate child abusers.

I've been reading posts on other blogs and forums about Vick and this man is almost unanimously DESPISED.

As Glenn Beck said, "It's easy to 'find Jesus' when you're in the gutter." Where will Jesus be for him when he's back on his feet? And where was Jesus when he was torturing all those animals? As someone said above, this is a "conversion of convenience."

Dave,

Re "spitting in the food they are preparing,"

Can you even begin to imagine what the illegals who are food workers in the US are doing to the food they are processing and preparing?

Can you even begin to imagine what the illegals who are food workers in the US are doing to the food they are processing and preparing?

I've often though about that, not just about illeglas but about other disgruntled food handlers.

I don't eat in any restaurants I'm not familiar with, unless I'm on a business trip and then it's unavoidable. But there's absolutely no way to monitor the people who process our food. All we can do is thoroughly wash our raw food and hope that the rest of it isn't contaminated.

Dave Burkett, that is a very real threat, even a fear, for some people.

I can mention the following:

1-I knew a guy years ago who worked in an International House of Pancakes. He said one ethnic "cook" there would break up a ciggarette and mix the pieces into pancakes he was making.

2-A workman I knew stopped for a cup of coffee at a downtown fast food place in our city, then got back in his truck and started to drive away as he sipped the coffee. He started to feel bad immediately, drove another few blocks, pulled over to the side, and passed out in his car. (He was of a different ethnic or racial persuasion than those who had served him at the fast food place, just as the majority of the customers at the Pancake house were as compared to the cook in the back who "prepared" their pancakes.)

I could give more examples, but in this delicate, politically correct age I would have skirt around what I am trying to say and I don't have the time and energy to do that.

Anonymous said...

I think just about everybody who visits this site wouldn't need you to skirt around. Scary examples there Al, and it's going to get nothing but worse. Hang onto your hat.
