REQUIEM

Below are the two final essays to be posted on Allegiance and Duty Betrayed. The first one is written by a friend -- screen name 'Euro-American Scum' -- who, over the past four years, has been the most faithful essayist here. He has written about everything from his pilgrimage to Normandy in 2004 to take part in the 60th–year commemoration of the invasion, to his memories of his tour in Vietnam. His dedication to America’s founding principles ... and those who have sacrificed to preserve them over the past 200+ years ... is unequaled. Thank you, E-A-S. It has been a privilege to include your writing here, and it is a privilege to call you my friend.

The second essay is my own farewell. And with it I thank all of the many regular visitors, and those who may have only dropped in occasionally, for coming here. I hope you learned something. I hope a seed or two was planted. But, even if not, I thank you for stopping by ... 25 March, 2010

A Dog's Life

A brief, light-hearted respite from the discouragement of witnessing what passes for 'the election process' in America 2008 ...

I sometimes wish I could enjoy a dog's life.

Our pup, Bert, recently photographed in the wee hours of the morning:

(No, she is not momentarily stretching. That is her permanent, sound-asleep position on the arm chair next to our bed.)

Would that those of us who have been witnessing the manipulation, and borderline corruption, of the election process could attain such relaxation and peace of mind.

Bert, in one of her more alert moments:

Would that the majority of the American electorate could possess the comprehension, inquisitiveness, allegiance, and desire to learn and explore, that many members of the family canidae regularly and consistently exhibit.

Finally, I would like to offer the following two-minute video as a means of future 'therapy' for those of us who (masochistically, for sure) intend to follow this election to its bitter November end.

When you find the deceptions, biases, and betrayals too much to bear, sit yourself down in front of your trusty computer, click on this link, and enjoy two minutes of the kind of joy that comes from recognizing the 'little blessings' of life. (Them dogs sure do have the right idea. :)

Back soon, in a more serious mode ... :)

I love that dalmation! Imagine if you had 101 of them? :-)

That video is a keeper!

(Stupid Question: How come you named your girl dog Bert?)

I laughed out loud at that silly spotted dog. How come we humans rarely enjoy such carefree jubilation???? ;)

Your Bert is beautiful Joanie.

How the hell does he breathe doing all that exercise with no air?

Those two silly black and white dogs sure know how to wring the most out of life. ;)

This is why I've never been without a good dog. They bring such joy and they ask for so little.

Thanks for the great pick-me-up, Joanie.

That dog has to be huffing and puffing jumping up and down under the snow like that. Why isn't he inhaling snow? I don't get it, but it's SO CUTE! Thanks Joanie!

In my younger days, I was always a cat person. For some unfathomable reason when I reached the age of 50, my affections switched to dogs.

I can't explain it, but I guess I liked the unpredictability and weirdness of cats when I was younger. These days, I like trustworthiness of dogs (and the warmth when our three sleep in our bed each night).

Actually, the "dog-heat" was the only thing that saved us while my wife and I were sleeping in our frozen little travel trailer for a couple winters while building our house here in WNC.

Sure, we had to make an appointment to flop over in that little bed, but it was nice and toasty. The water pipes froze, but not the dogs and us.

We learned firsthand the meaning of "three dog night".

I heart Bailey! :>)

That Bailey dog's gotta be high on something-- no living thing has that much energy! {g}

You just beautifully defined the difference between the two.

My apologies to real canines, but this dog finally met justice:

Actually, there's a lot of karma in one lawyer stiffing a bunch of other lawyers.

Joanie, you said "back soon". "Soon" has come and gone. ;)

I'd be interested in your take on the recent primaries, and tomorrow's in SC.
