REQUIEM

Below are the two final essays to be posted on Allegiance and Duty Betrayed. The first one is written by a friend -- screen name 'Euro-American Scum' -- who, over the past four years, has been the most faithful essayist here. He has written about everything from his pilgrimage to Normandy in 2004 to take part in the 60th–year commemoration of the invasion, to his memories of his tour in Vietnam. His dedication to America’s founding principles ... and those who have sacrificed to preserve them over the past 200+ years ... is unequaled. Thank you, E-A-S. It has been a privilege to include your writing here, and it is a privilege to call you my friend.

The second essay is my own farewell. And with it I thank all of the many regular visitors, and those who may have only dropped in occasionally, for coming here. I hope you learned something. I hope a seed or two was planted. But, even if not, I thank you for stopping by ... 25 March, 2010

A Man For Our Time

Duncan Hunter 2.jpg

Take a look at what the only real conservative in this race has to do to get some attention from the media.

And pay close attention to the reaction of the four imbecile pundits who are surprised by candidate Hunter’s impromptu appearance on this morning’s MSNBC ‘Morning Joe’ program.

Duncan and the Dimwits

Chris Matthews (*spit!*) will not even look at Hunter, and repeatedly attempts to talk over the point Hunter is trying to make. Pat Buchanan (*re-spit!*) does the same. The woman (proud to say I don’t know who she is so I won’t waste my spit on her) doesn’t even appear to know who Hunter is. And Joe Scarborough, the supposed ‘host’ of the program, simply does a little verbal tap dance and defers to Matthews’ prattling on about how he would prefer to talk about Obama.

Matthews and his cohorts in the mainstream media would prefer to pander to the ‘major candidates’ for president. They would prefer to discuss, ad infinitum, the platform that Obama, Clinton, Edwards, Romney, McCain, and Huckabee are all promoting: the ‘need for change’, and their ‘new vision for America’.

Such ludicrous generalities might be nice if placed in a stanza of a poem by a head-in-the-clouds modern American poet, but they serve no useful purpose in today’s frightening political climate.

You say you would like more detail than that? Too bad, because it ain’t forthcoming, and the media aren’t demanding it.

We live in a superficial, sound-bite-driven society. If it doesn’t sound poetic, and its expression lasts more than the time taken up by two minutes of television advertising, the public simply isn’t interested.

‘Need for change’?

‘New vision for America?’

What could sound nicer? And (got rhythm?) who could ask for anything more?

New and more devastating terrorist attacks over the horizon? Thousands of illegals (both Mexican and otherwise) pouring across our borders every day? That’ll all be solved by Obama et al. They, after all, have a new vision. What that new vision might entail is anybody’s guess, but, then again, it’s nice to be surprised. Takes one back to one's childhood (which appears to be where many modern American citizens are permanently trapped, when it comes to taking an interest in their republic’s precarious future).

On the other hand ...

Duncan Hunter has consistently and repeatedly spelled out his position on all critical issues that face America today.

  • He has proposed detailed methods of confronting the illegal immigration crisis, including fence design and cost, detailed plans as to how we should confront the 15+ million illegals already within our borders, methods of employer verification, changes in border patrol policy, birth right citizenship reform, and non-amnesty.

  • He unequivocally supports Israel’s right to exist, and to defend itself, with partial funding for missiles and materiel from the U.S.

  • He unequivocally supports America’s efforts to promote freedom in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

  • He is vehemently opposed to the North American Union (AKA Security and Prosperity Partnership), and he co-authored a resolution stating that the U.S. should not be a party to the NAU, or allow the construction of the NAFTA Superhighway.

  • He believes that the U.S. should dramatically reduce the financial burden it carries in the United Nations, and should refuse to abide by any treaty that in any way threatens our national sovereignty.

  • He has authored a Right to Life Amendment and a Constitutional Amendment defining marriage.

  • He has taken a clear and detailed stance on educational vouchers and home schooling.

  • He has taken a clear stance on the judicial and legislative perversion of the First Amendment.

  • He is unabashedly in favor of preserving our Second Amendment rights, without qualification.

  • He is in favor of massive tax reform, including (but not limited to) removing antiquated tax provisions, permanently removing the Marriage Penalty Tax, reforming the Alternative Minimum Tax, and achieving a balanced budget by demanding efficiency, and eliminating duplicate federal programs.

  • He supports, and has authored, several bills which will greatly decrease the federal government’s power to seize private land through eminent domain.

  • He has consistently supported efforts to de-fund the National Endowment of the Arts, and has fought to re-channel those funds into public school art programs.

  • He has fought to return decision-making powers in education to the states and local school districts.

  • He supports more choice, and less federal dictate, in healthcare, and has proposed major Medicare reform.
... yet I don't know that he's ever told us that he has a 'new vision for America'.

... which is why Congressman Hunter hasn’t a prayer of occupying the White House, and why he must resort to impromptu visits to Mickey Mouse ‘news analysis’ programs to attempt to get his message across.

It’s a sad, and terribly ominous, day in America.

No matter his fate in this election, I suspect Hunter will continue to spend the rest of his life working for the good of America, while someone who isn't fit to shine his shoes will be at the helm.

What's wrong with Huckabee? I haven't yet heard him say anything I didn't like, and he's personable, down to earth, and not afraid of the Dems.

If he's still in the race, I'll be voting for Hunter in my state's primary, and then holding my nose in the general election like I've done for the last 20 years.

I've heard plenty from Huckabee I don't like (but most of the time I do like what he says... it just is completely contradictory to his history).

He supports a nationwide smoking ban.
He supports federal benefits for illegals
He supports big public education, and has been against school choice (and really didn't do all that much for homeschooling even though he was endorsed by the HSLDA).

But enough of bashing Huckbee.

Hunter is THE MAN. DH-08!!!

"In selecting men for office, let principle be your guide. Regard not the particular sect or denomination of the candidate, look to his character. The scriptures teach that rulers should be men who rule in the fear of God, able men, men of truth, hating covetousness. It is to the neglect of this rule that we must ascribe the multified frauds, breaches of trust, and embezzlement of public property which tarnish the character of our country and disgrace government. When a citizen gives his vote to a man of known immorality, he abuses his civic responsibility, he sacrifices not only his interest, but that of his neighbor; he betrays the interest of his country."

The media coverage of Huckabee and Hunter over the last couple months has been amazing. Like Hunter, Huckabee raised pocket change compared to the "big names" but the media constantly promoted him as a "conservative" because he isn't. Then, if he gets the nomination, they'll have Clinton or Obama vs. Jimmy Carter.

Thanks for the great piece Joanie, I agree with every word.

We have an open, unprotected border. We have millions of illegals taking jobs Americans want, and living off of our tax dollars without paying taxes themselves. In the upcoming election, we have a Senator from Tennessee that spent much of his career making it easy for illegals to work here. We have a Senator and Vietnam veteran who led the charge to give amnesty to illegals and put off building the fence. We have a mayor of NYC who stood up for sanctuary city policies. We have a governor from one of the most liberal states in the union.

Duncan Hunter is the one to stand up for a secure border. He built a border fence in San Diego, and has a perfect rating from Americans for Better Immigration because he has NEVER voted for amnesty, and has stood up for increased penalties on companies that hire illegals.

If elected, Duncan Hunter has promised to pardon the two American border guards who are sitting in jail for doing their jobs. No other candidate has even mentioned those two, as far as I know.

Hunter even wrote a letter urging President Bush to pardon Ramos and Compean for Thanksgiving. I guess Bush never got the letter.

It's good to have you back, Joanie.

Hunter is the strongest conservative in the race. Thompson is not quite so strong, but he is far and away better than McCain or Romney.

Either Hunter or Thompson has to be wear the mantel of conservatism in the GOP. Take them out, and you are left with three RINOs, a libertarian idealist, and Bill Clinton with a theology degree and better personal morals.

Conservatives have a duty to preserve the party of Goldwater and Reagan. The triumph of Romney or McCain in the GOP primaries is the posthumous victory of Nelson Rockefeller.

I like your list of Hickabee sins, 'anonymous'. The level of ignorance saturating the GOP about Duncan Hunter, is destroying the Republican Party's association with conservatives.

The best chance we have, is with principles, and to stand with Duncan Hunter, with all due respect to Fred Thompson, who people like as they did Bob Dole.

Joanie's article about Duncan Hunter's recent attempt to bring to the attention of the "liberal media" and thereby the sanctimonious "heads" of the GOP, the fact that he won a Wyoming delegate, is poorly handled by the "talking heads" of the TV industry *and* the "santimonious heads" of the GOP.

It is somewhat ironic, that the Democrat Party has "Super Delegates" who can trump the wishes of the general electorate in its primaries.

Ironic, because, some Republican's think, "We're not like that."

Well, such Republicans are wrong, because the GOP is like that --- whereas the Democrats have *hundreds* of "Super Delegates," the Republican party has a collective "head" that has won for the GOP, the political scientists' quip:

The Stupid Party

As in 1979 - 1980, when the GOP tried as now, to insert John Connally, ex-Gov. of Texas, into the lead, some of us who had been observing Ronald Reagan and *his* reach into the heart and soul of what we love about our country, "just knew" he was the one.

The same is true now, about Duncan Hunter.

Yet the Republican Big Shots are petrified of his ... conservativism.

Well, my friend Joanie, who maintains this blog, is not afraid, nor am I.

Nor is Duncan Hunter, and so he speaks without trying to please the liberals among the Republican Party, who are obsessed with not upsetting with the truth, and thus, we hear from, what have now become entitled as "RINO's" ("Republican in Name ONLY"), soft-est-ry ... the usual "vision" statements about "moving forward" and all other wordity that avoids the problem:

The maintenance of our foundations of liberty
upon which we have a future.

Simply eloquent, F_S. I couldn't possibly add to anything you've said.

... other than to mention that my dear Dad began calling the republican party the 'stupid party' when they started distancing themselves from Goldwater back in the late 60s. He continued affixing that label until he passed away in 2001 (with the exception of the Reagan years, when he continued to call a large contingent of the party 'stupid', but adored Reagan and his policies).

Thank you, as always, for the excellent commentary. I agree with Jim, above, that it ought to be required reading for all registered voters.

From "Hunter and the Knuckleheads" [similar to your "Duncan and the Dimwits", Joanie]. The whole article is well worth reading.:

MANCHESTER, N. H. -- The big red headline on the e-mailed press release from Duncan Hunter could only have meant one thing.

"Media Alert." And then, in smaller black letters, were the words, "Duncan Hunter to Make Major Announcement."

Word spread quickly Monday that Hunter, the Alpine Republican congressman, was dropping out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination, one day ahead of the New Hampshire first-in-the-nation primary. After all, under funded and outmanned, he had been a mere blip in the Iowa caucuses last week and was barely registering in the latest New Hampshire polls.

And so the press conference in a hotel exhibition space drew seven television cameras and a few print reporters, a bigger media presence than usually assembles for Hunter's events.

But they were about to be fooled.

Hunter, a onetime chairman of the powerful House Armed Services Committee who was first elected to Congress in 1980, gleefully noted that he had actually won a delegate to the national convention in Saturday's Wyoming caucuses. That was more than either John McCain or Rudy Giuliani could say.

"Fox news has excluded Duncan Hunter from the next debate in Myrtle Beach on Thursday. They let Ron Paul in, but not Duncan Hunter."

Isn't the reason for that that they set ground rules for inclusion in the debates now (like you had to get 2% of the vote in the previous primaries where you were on the ballot, or something like that)? I know Paul's been getting more votes than Hunter.

Hunter Wins Nevada Republican Assembly Endorsement

By Alan Gray, NewsBlaze

The Nevada Republican Assembly held a Presidential Endorsing Convention on Sunday Jan 6, 2008, choosing to endorse Congressman Duncan Hunter.

The endorsement by NVRA by more than a two thirds majority is a significant statement about the character and principles of a living and practicing conservative Republican. Duncan Hunter's record as a 26 year member of Congress places him squarely at the lead of all the GOP contenders, as the standard bearer of conservative Republican example.

On Saturday Jan 5, at 1:00 PM Candidate Duncan Hunter addressed an enthusiastic crowd of convention attendees, by phone conference.

The President of the NVRA, Michael Kressler and the members of the NVRA are proud to endorse Duncan Hunter for President for his stand on the values of the sanctity of life, support of our constitution, 2nd Amendment rights, security of our borders, limited government, love of God, parental rights, Fair Trade, Fair Tax, educational excellence, state sovereignty, controlled spending and protection of private property.

Congressman Hunter was elated to receive word from NV campaign personnel just moments following the prestigious and important NVRA Nevada Republican Assembly endorsement.

Hunter is not a member of the open borders/globalist crowd. The GOP, the media and the corporate interests will never allow him anywhere near the presidency. Look how they shut him out of the debate. They know damn well if his message gets out, his popularity will take off like a rocket and all their pre-approved candidates will be toast.

It's not only the MSM, but so-called conservative blogs have black-balled Hunter as well. Powerline, for example, NEVER mentions his name at all.

They listed a delegate count a couple days ago, and "forgot" to mention that Hunter has one delegate.

Another good essay Joanie and many thoughtful comments. There is another conservative choice however. As I read down your list of Hunter's strong conservative stances I was reminded in almost all cases, except for a few where Hunter has been particularly active, of Alan Keyes.

Too bad the press paints him as a "one issue" (abortion) candidate. His conservative "bona fides" have been demonstrated for more than 20 years, but he, like Hunter, just can't get any traction.

I agree that it is indeed a sad, and terribly ominous, day in America.

Keep up the good fight.

joanie said...

Funny you should mention Keyes, Barry, because I agonized over whether to include him as the only other viable conservative in this race.

I supported Keyes wholeheartedly when he was running back in 1996 and 2000. As a matter of fact, Rick and I heard him speak back in ’96 when he spoke at a local banquet hall. His speech was one of the most intelligent (literally mesmerizing) political speeches I have ever heard. You could hear a pin drop.

I sincerely believe that, on most major issues, his views completely parallel those of Duncan Hunter (which, like Hunter, is why the average American barely knows his name).

The one issue with which I take great issue with Keyes (although it wouldn’t keep me from voting for him, since so many of the others are so much more important) is the issue of slave reparations.

Keyes believes that America should follow the lead of the Romans. When a city was destroyed by the Romans, the Romans exempted that city from taxation for a generation or two, so that the city could rebuild.

Keyes believes that blacks of slave heritage should be declared exempt from all federal taxation so as to give these blacks a competitive edge in the labor market – stating that employers would prefer to hire them, since they would be cheaper to employ, and that our government owes them compensation for all of the years when their slave ancestors were exploited.

Although I completely disagree with his proposal (for reasons that would require an entire essay), it would not keep me from voting for him, but I strongly suspect that, were he to receive the republican nomination, the media would see to it that his stand on reparations would be trumpeted far and wide. That would gain him no support from leftists (since they would presumably be voting for Clinton or Obama to begin with), and conservatives would abandon him in droves.

I see Duncan Hunter pretty much as Alan Keyes without the reparations baggage.

Thanks, Barry, for bringing Keyes' name into the mix, though. He is a good man who isn’t afraid to proclaim the truth, and the media be damned.

Incredible, that Duncan Hunter who is by now obviously the least self-ish of all the candidates, is being excluded by not only Fox News, but he is also being excluded by all the pretenders who haven't got the guts to stand up to Fox News and protest on his behalf, prior to the upcoming Jan. 30th debate at the Reagan Library.

Anonymous said...

Hunter got about 3,000 votes in the MI primary today to Romney's 300,000.

If the media played fair and let the public know what Hunter stands for, and the various "news" organizations allowed him in the debates, the outcome would have been much different.

Elections from now on are programmed by the powers that be.

There is no clear front runner in the Republican race mainly because none of the "leaders" have a conservative philosophical core. The only two Republicans in the race who do (Hunter and Keyes) are being blacked out, and most Republicans don't even realizes they are a choice to be voted for. Most Republicans I know haven't even heard of Hunter or Keyes. It's disgusting.

Anonymous said...

There is no clear front runner in the Republican race mainly because none of the "leaders" have a conservative philosophical core.

You can say that again!

Anonymous said...

Republicans have proven once again that they are the STUPID PARTY.

Hunter’s full concession statement:

"We started this campaign a year ago right here, in San Diego Harbor, against the backdrop of American Naval power. We launched a campaign emphasizing a strong national defense, enforceable borders and restoring the industrial base of America.

Today we end this campaign. The Nevada caucuses reflecting only 2% of the vote for me. I ran the campaign exactly the way I wanted to, and at this point not being able to gain traction in conservative states of Nevada and South Carolina, it’s time to allow our volunteers and supporters to focus on the campaigns that remain viable.

It’s time for me to gear up for 2008’s defense bill that will be put together over the coming weeks. There is work to be done in the areas of troop protection and new capabilities to be deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. And over the horizon, the emergence of Communist China as a military super power will require a new emphasis on U.S. capabilities in undersea warfare, space, and long range air-power.
The best way to maintain a new era of peace is for the U.S. to remain strong. Over the coming year I will endeavor to help craft a defense bill that meets the new security challenges.

Since our campaign began over 200,000 additional manufacturing jobs have been lost. 1.8 million jobs have left the U.S. for China. This fracturing of the U.S. industrial base is a long term threat to America. I hope that the remaining candidates will recognize it and address it. As the senior Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, I will seek to address it.

Only hours ago a border patrolman was killed in the California Desert. This tragedy emphasizes more than ever the compelling case for the completion of the border fence.

Since I wrote the bill that mandates 854 miles of double border fence only a few miles have been constructed. Over the next year in Congress I will do everything in my power to get that fence built.

Finally, for Lynn and me, the campaign over the last year has shown us this: America is a wonderful country. Our people have great character and goodness, and the meeting of new friends has enriched our lives.
The failure of our campaign to gain traction is mine and mine alone. But we have driven the issues of national security, the border fence, the emergence of China and the need to reverse bad trade policy. Because of that, this campaign has been very worthwhile, and for the Hunter family, a lot of fun.

To our friends and supporters and volunteers: many thanks. And now it’s time for me to focus on developing a 2008 defense bill that serves our troops and our nation.

Thanks, and God Bless America.

--Duncan Hunter
